Angela hates SiD

I have just got back from taking SiD for a leisurely walk. The caravan park here in Eucla, Western Australia, has beautiful views of the ocean, has a lovely restaurant (albeit pricey), and is kind enough to allow dogs. So I took SiD for a stroll around the grounds this morning and was admiring the beautiful views. SiD was pulling on the lead so I thought I would let him wander for a bit without the leash, so I let go. Big mistake. I continued to wander around but SiD couldn't be seen or heard. I called him, and called him, and then my heart sank. I remembered the free-ranging chickens that live next to the caravan park. Then I heard the terrified screams of chickens under attack and I sprinted to the chickens (lost my slippers along the way). I saw SiD chasing a chicken but I couldn't get into the pen. I'm yelling at SiD and my heart rate is going at a rate of knots trying to save this poor chook, who can run surprisingly fast I might add! I'm barefoot, in my pyjamas and running around this pen trying to find a way in when, to my absolute horror, I see SiD catch the chook. I find the gate, launch in, and grab SiD by the scruff of the neck. He releases the chicken, and surprisingly the chook runs away with a few less feathers. At the least she will be a bit cold tonight but I'm sure she will die of shock today. I'm back in the caravan now. My feet still stink of fertiliser and I can hear the rooster calling; constantly reminding me what a jerk SiD is! I'm too embarrassed to tell the owners of the park right now, but I will have to at some stage. The owner is covered with tattoos and constantly has a cigarette hanging out his mouth so this should be interesting. SiD is now in the back of the car and he can stay there for the rest of the day as far as I am concerned. What a jerk.

Today I'm working on my thesis (again) and Toby is going to head down to the beach and do some exploring. We had two-minute noodles for dinner last night because we had to hand over all our fresh food at the WA border quarantine station. The quarantine officer was patronising and rude by the way. She had the nerve to ask me if I knew what frozen vegetables are and explain to me how they are different to fresh ones. I'm still bitter about it. Anyway, Toby and I decided last night that we are going to shout ourselves dinner at the restaurant tonight. I suspect they will have a chook special on the menu...

I've chickened out (pardon the pun) of telling the owner about the chicken debacle. Instead, I've decided I will send them a letter of apology on behalf of SiD and send them some money to buy a new chicken. What a palaver!

Toby and I had dinner at the restaurant tonight. We had the soup and an entree fettucini because we are being tight with our money. Guess what was on the specials board...

Genesis

Welcome to our bloggocommentary! Day one of our trip was surprisingly drama free, so really there is nothing exciting to report. If we had broken down, lost a wheel, detached the caravan accidentally or met some crazy people; that would be interesting, but we haven't.  So all I have to report is that we left Adelaide on the 12th of April and landed in Port Augusta that evening. We had dinner with the lovely John Marsh at the Standpipe Indian Restaurant (it was was beautiful by the way - highly recommend it) and were actually surprised by the beauty of  Port Augusta. We have driven through it a million times but have never stopped long enough to enjoy it. Anyway, if you are ever driving through, stay at the Shoreline Caravan Park (Toby thinks the 'Shoreline' part of their name is technically correct but somewhat overstated...go there and you'll see what we mean). It was clean, tidy and cheap enough.

Next stop, Wudinna. We stayed overnight there and now we are in Nullabor Caravan Park. Nothing exciting to report here either except that I have a pimple on my cheek that is so large it is obstructing my view. Not that it matters because we are on the Nullabor - and let's face it - there is not much to see here anyway except saltbushes and bitumen. We are looking forward to crossing the border, although for me, today was a milestone. Going past Ceduna where I have worked for the last 3 months, and past Penong (where I was told to 'shut the f*^k up' by a scurrilous local during my time helping out with the CSIRO tuna spotting) felt to me like we were officially on our road trip. So here we go! Off on our adventure!!!
